21-year-old Code for Cape Town alumni, Mandisa Dlubom joined Responsive Tech as an intern earlier this year and we’re so grateful that she did. We asked her a few questions and her answers reveal why she has been such a good fit and how having her with us has been more than mutually beneficial. What a woman!
Have you ever had a song “stuck” at the back of your mind on repeat?
I bet you have!
My teenage daughter is going through a phase of watching musicals. This means the tune to Disney’s High School Musical - We're All In This Together has been on repeat throughout my morning drive to work.
The lyrics found in the song like,
...all our dreams have no limitations...everyone is special in their own way, we make each other strong...we’re different in a good way…
are words that make me think of the people I work with, who have not just become colleagues, but family.
Responsive Has Become My Family:
1. My team members remind me to lighten up
Some people take life way too seriously. Sometimes, I am one of those. Responsive has helped remind me to lighten up.
A funny image can break the ice in the most stressful moment. Responsive has a Whatsapp group which is a never-ending source of entertainment and fun. It’s also a place where our team members share what’s going on in their individual lives and support each other. It shows me that where I work we are not a nine-to-five institution, but a family.
2. The leaders input into my life
Every Monday morning we have a meeting which involves breakfast, teachings, and conversation.
“I believe each and every one of us is leaders…” is something our Technical Director said in a recent meeting. I have always felt at Responsive as if the leaders care about me and want me to be the best version of me.
I appreciate being able to work in an environment where the team culture is intentional about encouraging and growing the team members.
3. I’m accepted for who I am
It doesn’t matter what country you’re from, what background you have or what the colour of your skin is, in our workplace you are accepted and valued.
Difference is valued at Responsive. In fact, it is encouraged. We love it when our team members bring a fresh, innovative and individual perspective to work. I love that at Responsive the team strives to keep things politics free.

4. I am held accountable for living a life of excellence
If there is one thing I have learnt working at Responsive, it is that I am surrounded by an incredible team, who inspire me to step out while holding me accountable for the work I am doing.
The people I work with make me better and hold me to a higher level of delivery. They push me to dream and assist me in taking the steps to get to where I want to go. I’ve come to realise that working is less about earning a paycheck and more about investing into a vision which is bigger than yourself.
“...all our dreams have no limitations...everyone is special in their own way, we make each other strong...we’re different in a good way…”
There are so many ways, we can inspire change in the workplace. When we recognize that we are in this together with our colleagues, as the song says, we take responsibility for the role we play.
What part are you playing today as a team member to inspire and encourage a colleague?
